Vinachem Accelerates Completion of Conditions for Potash Project Implementation in Laos
On the morning of June 24, at the Government Headquarters, Politburo Member and Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Phạm Gia Túc chaired a meeting to review Vietnam-Laos cooperation in preparation for high-level diplomatic activities between the two countries expected to take place in the last months of 2026. The meeting was attended by leaders from relevant ministries, sectors, and agencies, as well as representatives of enterprises implementing cooperation projects in Laos.

Representing Vinachem, General Director Nguyễn Hữu Tú reported on the progress of the Potash Mining and Processing Project in Khammouane province (Lao PDR)—a key economic cooperation project between Vietnam and Laos, which is also of great significance for proactively securing potash raw materials for domestic fertilizer production.
According to the report, after receiving the construction permit from the Lao government, Vinachem completed the transport of all machinery and equipment for the solution mining technology to the construction site, laying the foundation for moving to the construction phase once the project receives final approval. Technical and legal procedures are also being expedited, closely following the set plan.
One important milestone was on November 3, 2025, when Vinachem submitted the Feasibility Study (FS) report to Lao authorities for regulatory appraisal. Subsequently, on May 8, 2026, the appraisal report was completed. Currently, the parties are coordinating to finalize the documentation per the comments from the relevant authorities, with approval expected from Lao regulatory bodies in July 2026. This continuous workflow demonstrates that the investment preparation process is being closely monitored and managed on schedule.
Additionally, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report was completed and submitted to Lao authorities on May 21, 2026. Vinachem is continuing to work with Lao authorities to finalize documents as required, aiming for approval from the Lao Department of Environment, also expected in July 2026. At the same time, the Group is proactively preparing conditions for the implementation phase, such as developing investment cooperation plans, working with financial institutions to arrange funding, preparing FEED design, EPC documents, and infrastructure at the site.
Beyond investment preparation, Vinachem has also directly participated and sent multiple delegations to work with the Lao government, ministries, sectors, the Laos-Vietnam Cooperation Committee, and Khammouane provincial authorities to promptly report progress, resolve difficulties, and promote compliance with regulations. At the same time, the Group continues to boost trade promotion in Laos by introducing its main product groups such as fertilizers, tires, batteries, detergents, and cleaning products, thus expanding the presence of Vinachem products in the Lao market.

With a total planned investment of about USD 492 million and a designed capacity of 500,000 tons of potash per year, the Potash Mining and Processing Project in Khammouane is one of the largest investment cooperation projects between Vietnam and Laos. When operational, the project will not only help efficiently exploit Laos' potash resources but also provide a strategic input source for Vietnam’s fertilizer industry, contributing to greater self-reliance and long-term raw material security.
Alongside the progress of the Potash Project, Vinachem continues to expand trade promotion activities in Laos. According to the national trade promotion program conducted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in July 2026, the Group will participate in the 2026 Vietnam-Laos Trade Fair (VIETLAOEXPO 2026) in Vientiane, promoting its key products, connecting with partners, and expanding economic and trade cooperation between businesses of both countries.
The results reported at the meeting reflect that the implementation of the Khammouane Potash Project is being carried out synchronously in three areas: completing pre-investment preparations, consolidating implementation cooperation plans, and expanding trade promotion activities in the Lao market. This not only sets the foundation for the project to soon move to the investment and construction phase but also contributes to realizing the Party and Government’s policy on strengthening economic connectivity, promoting investment, and developing two-way trade between Vietnam and Laos. In the long term, the project is expected to provide an additional source of potash for domestic fertilizer production, enhance the self-reliance of the chemical industry, and continue to make practical contributions to consolidating and developing the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos.
