On the afternoon of July 27 in Hanoi, the Vietnam National Chemical Group (Vinachem) and the Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) held a working session to discuss strategic cooperation in the research and development of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Nguyen Huu Tu, President and CEO of Vinachem, and Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, President and CEO of EVN.

Representing Vinachem were Mr. Le Hoang, Deputy CEO of the Group; Mr. Le Van Nam, CEO of Southern Battery Joint Stock Company (PINACO); Mr. Nguyen Dien Phuoc Chan, Deputy CEO of PINACO; along with representatives from Vinachem’s specialized departments. EVN was represented by leaders from its specialized departments.

Speaking at the meeting, EVN President and CEO Nguyen Anh Tuan noted that as the share of renewable energy continues to increase, demand for energy storage systems will also grow to enhance power absorption capacity and ensure the safe, stable, and efficient operation of the power system. EVN is currently studying investments in BESS projects in several northern regions and considers mastering key technologies—particularly system control, management, and operation technologies—to be essential for improving investment efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring operational safety.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan highlighted Vinachem’s strengths in battery research and manufacturing, particularly through Southern Battery Joint Stock Company (PINACO). Building on the complementary strengths of both organizations, he said there is significant potential for cooperation in researching, developing, and applying energy storage solutions to support Vietnam’s national power system.

On behalf of Vinachem, President and CEO Nguyen Huu Tu said that following initial discussions with EVN, the Group had directed its specialized units to study the practical needs of the power sector while also reviewing international experience in energy storage system development. With more than 50 years of experience in battery manufacturing, PINACO provides a strong foundation for Vinachem to continue investing in research and developing products for emerging energy applications, gradually expanding its role in the energy industry value chain.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Tu emphasized that strengthening cooperation between Vinachem and EVN is an important step toward implementing the major policies and strategic directions of the Party and the State, particularly Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation; Resolution No. 79-NQ/TW of the Politburo on further reforming and improving the performance of state-owned enterprises; as well as Decision No. 21/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister approving the National List of Strategic Technologies and Strategic Technology Products.

According to the Vinachem CEO, cooperation between the two groups is intended not only to meet the growing demand for energy storage systems in the power sector but also to gradually master strategic technologies, strengthen capabilities in the research, design, manufacturing, and integration of "Make in Vietnam" battery energy storage systems. The partnership also presents an opportunity to leverage the strengths of both state-owned enterprises, establish an integrated value chain from research and manufacturing to application, contribute to national energy security, promote green economic growth, and enhance the competitiveness of Vietnam’s industrial sector in the new development phase.

During the meeting, leaders of both groups discussed directions for cooperation in research and development, technology transfer, testing, and the deployment of battery energy storage systems suited to Vietnam’s practical conditions. The two sides agreed to assign their specialized departments to continue studying and developing a detailed cooperation roadmap, clearly identifying priority areas and implementation plans for the coming period.

The meeting marked a promising beginning for collaboration between the two state-owned economic groups in the field of high technology. It also contributes to implementing the Party’s and the State’s major policies on science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation while creating new momentum for the development of Vietnam’s chemical industry in line with the energy transition, supporting sustainable development and strengthening national energy security.
