During a working visit to Egypt from April 15–16, 2026, the delegation of Vietnam National Chemical Group (Vinachem), led by General Director Nguyễn Hữu Tú, conducted a series of site surveys and strategic discussions aimed at reinforcing a sustainable supply chain of raw materials for fertilizer production in Vietnam.

Direct Survey at the Strategic Abu Tartur Apatite Mine

The highlight of the program was a visit and technology survey of the mining and processing operations at the Abu Tartur mine in New Valley Governorate, more than 700 km southwest of Cairo. This area possesses Egypt’s strategic phosphate reserves and is managed and operated by Misr Phosphate Company—the country’s leading state-owned enterprise in apatite mining and export, under the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Egypt.

Misr Phosphate is currently one of Egypt’s largest producers of phosphate concentrate, with an annual capacity of about 5 million tons. The raw materials are sourced from one of the world’s largest phosphate reserves at Abu Tartur mine, located approximately 50 km west of El Kharga. The company holds mining rights and operating licenses at major phosphate mines such as Abu Tartur, El Sebaia, and mines along the Red Sea, providing a diverse range of ores with varying grades to meet the stringent requirements of export markets. Notably, Misr Phosphate is licensed to operate the entire Abu Tartur plateau, covering up to 220 km², demonstrating the vast scale of resources and long-term, stable supply potential.

Directly accessing the extraction and logistics processes on site allowed the Vinachem delegation to comprehensively assess the partner’s supply capacity, ore technical standards, and mine operations. These on-site findings clearly reflect the Group’s proactive approach in seeking high-quality, stable, and long-term apatite ore sources to serve the domestic fertilizer industry.

MOU Signing in New Cairo – Establishing a Framework for Long-Term Cooperation

Building on the field survey, on April 16, 2026, at the headquarters in New Cairo, General Director Nguyễn Hữu Tú and Mr. Mohamed Abd El-Aziem, Chairman of Misr Phosphate, officially signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two sides.

According to the MOU, Misr Phosphate will supply apatite ore from the Abu Tartur and Red Sea mines for Vinachem’s fertilizer factories in Vietnam; specific terms regarding volume, quality, pricing, logistics, and trade will be agreed upon in separate contracts. The two parties will establish a Joint Steering Committee to coordinate and promote the implementation of the cooperation contents. The MOU is effective from the date of signing and may be extended as mutually agreed.

In a spirit of trust and openness, leaders of Misr Phosphate highly valued Vinachem’s position, affirming that establishing a partnership with a core enterprise and pillar of Vietnam’s chemical industry is an honor and a strategic step to maximize both sides’ expertise.

For Vinachem, direct access to large-scale phosphate resources in Egypt not only opens up opportunities to diversify raw material sources, but also enhances initiative in securing input resources for the fertilizer sector—a key area for the Group. This is also an important foundation for Vinachem to gradually expand its value chain from phosphate ore, moving towards the production of high value-added chemical products, including purified phosphoric acid for the electronics, semiconductor, and rare earth extraction industries.

This cooperation agreement also affirms Vinachem’s reputation and international integration capability, steadily expanding its network of strategic partners in the Middle East – North Africa region, aiming for a sustainable, efficient, and long-term supply chain.
