Dhaka, Oct 6 (bdnews24.com) — The government has initiated necessary steps to ensure adequate urea supply for this year's boro season.

Industries minister Dilip Barua gave the assurance at a meeting of international bidders interested to supply urea.

Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) will procure urea from abroad and local producers.

He said that he was hopeful of timely urea supply this year similar to last year, a ministry press release states citing the minister.

Urea suppliers said that steps are underway to ensure urea supply as needed. Bulk of the urea supply is expected in Nov.

They have assured Barua of fully supporting and cooperating with the government in this regard.

They demanded that urea consignments, already at Chittangong and Mongla, be unloaded swiftly.

The Ashuganj Fertiliser Factory in Brahmanbaria is unlikely to meet the annual target of 380,000 tonnes due to the frequent production interruptions, Usman Gani, factory managing director, told bdnews24.com in September. The amount of urea production so far this year, i.e. since July, has only been 7,712 tonnes.

In August, Qatar supplied 0.3 million tonnes of urea, with an additional 0.1 million tonnes.

The industries minister has urged all to do their best in ensuring sufficient urea supply in upcoming boro season.
