Belarus keen to enhance ties with Vietnam

Belarus is interested in enhancing its bilateral and multilateralrelationships with Vietnam and wants Vietnam to provide support and actas a bridge for Belarus to promote ties with other ASEAN nations,affirmed Chairman of the Belarusian House of Representatives VladimirAndreichenko.
Chairman V. Andreichenko made thestatement during his talks with Vietnamese National Assembly (NA)Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong following a welcome ceremony in Hanoi onthe afternoon of Oct. 19.
The National Assembly ofthe Republic of Belarus always attaches importance to thedevelopment of its relationship with the Vietnamese NA and highlightsthe contributions by the two countries’ parliamentarian friendshipgroups to promoting the friendship and cooperation between the twolegislatures and countries, said Chairman Andreichenko.
Andreichenko, who has arrived in Hanoi for a four-day visit,congratulated Vietnam for its great achievements in nationalconstruction and development and its rising international position androle, especially in the Asia-Pacific region and the Association ofSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Chairman Tronghighly valued the significance of Chairman Andreichenko’s first visitto Vietnam, expressing his belief that the visit would makeimportant contributions to boosting the traditional friendship andall-around cooperation between the two countries and legislative bodies.
Having noted the fine development of the twoparliaments’ cooperation, the Vietnamese legislative chief said that theVietnamese NA, the supreme organ of state power, was conducting arenovation in organisation and operation towards more democracy andefficiency.
He said he hoped the cooperation andexchanges between the Vietnamese legislature and the BelarusianHouse of Representatives would be effectively developed.
Vietnam highly appreciated Belarusian consideration and hopefor strengthening bilateral and multilateral ties with ASEAN, ChairmanTrong said, adding that Vietnam is willing to act as a bridge forBelarus to develop its relations with ASEAN nations.
Thetwo chairmen agreed that Vietnam-Belarus economic and trade ties havenot matched their potential, citing a two-way trade turnover of just 120million USD in 2009.
Much needs to be done tostrengthen economic, trade and investment cooperation, on the basis ofexploring each country’s potential and advantage, they said.
Thetwo sides need more efforts to overcome difficulties to increasetwo-way trade value in the future as outlined in their signedagreements, along with expanded investment cooperation in bothcountries, according to the two chairmen.
They also agreed to facilitate business cooperation between enterprises of both countries.
Chairman Trong asked Belarus to consider the signing of a Free Trade Agreement with Vietnam.
On this occasion, he also thanked Belarus for creating favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community there.
Both Chairman Trong and Chairman V. Andreichenko agreed that the twolegislative bodies would actively implement signed cooperativeagreements, oversee the implementation of cooperative agreements anddocuments between the two governments and support cooperation betweenlocalities and business circles of the two countries.
Thetwo sides will continue to exchange delegations, share experiences onlegislation and supervision and strengthen cooperation at regional andinternational inter-parliamentary forums./.
