Vietnam, South Africa seek closer cooperation

Vietnam and South Africa should promote economic cooperation in tradeand investment, raising two-way trade to impressive figures in thefuture.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung made this statement on receiving KgalemaMotlanthe, Vice President of South Africa and vice president of theAfrican National Congress (ANC) in Hanoi on October 6.

PM Dung expressed his pleasure at the development of Vietnam-SouthAfrica friendship relations, especially in politics, foreign affairs andeconomic ties and said that potential for cooperation between the twonations was still very great.

Vietnam and SouthAfrica should cooperate better in international bilateral andmultilateral forums, especially the United Nations forum and make strongpreparations for the Vietnam-South Africa intergovernmental meetingthat is scheduled to open by the end of this year, he said.

Vice President Kgalema Motlanthe said economic cooperation wouldprovide a suitable momentum for cooperative activities in areas wherethe two countries have strengths, such as environment and education andtraining.

He also suggested early discussions aboutsigning an agreement to open a direct air route from South Africa toVietnam, creating favourable conditions for trade and travel.

The same day, at a meeting with Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member andpermanent member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee,Kgalema Motlanthe expressed his desire to promote cooperative tiesbetween the two Parties, increase information exchanges and shareleadership experiences.

He said the traditionalrelationship between the ANC and the Vietnamese Communist Party was asolid foundation to foster bilateral ties.

TruongTan Sang affirmed that Vietnam wishes to further expand the bilateralcooperative ties, especially economic ties and trade with South Africa.He said he believed the fine relations between the two Parties andcountries would achieve new progress for the mutual benefits of the twopeoples./
