57 Years of Tradition in the Vietnamese Chemical Industry – Continuing the Legacy, Advancing with Confidence in a New Era
19 August 1969 marks a defining milestone in the history of the Vietnamese chemical industry—the founding of the General Department of Chemicals, which laid a firm foundation for the sector’s focused and strategically guided development. Over 57 years of construction and progress, generations of staff and workers in the chemical industry have continuously strived, overcoming adversity and making significant contributions to the nation’s building and defence.

From Difficult Beginnings to a Pillar Industry
Vietnam’s chemical industry was forged during the years of resistance against French colonialism and further developed through the American war. Despite the country’s many hardships and shortages of facilities and equipment, successive generations in the chemical sector worked tirelessly—producing, supporting the war effort and supplying the front lines.
Major chemical plants such as Lam Thao Superphosphate Fertiliser Plant, Viet Tri Chemical Plant, Van Dien Fused Phosphate Fertiliser Plant, and Ha Bac Fertiliser and Chemical Plant became foundational pillars of Vietnamese industry.
The establishment of the General Department of Chemicals on 19 August 1969 was a turning point, ushering in a new era of systematic management, organisation, and development for the industry. During the war years, the sector both produced and contributed to the fight, ensuring essential products for the economy and national defence. From 1965 to 1975, despite the heavy toll of war, the total industrial output of the sector in 1975 was 2.25 times that of 1965; many new production facilities were built, forming the basis for future growth.
After reunification, the chemical industry continued to expand, restoring and developing production to meet the growing needs of the economy. Particularly during the renovation period, the sector gradually shifted from a centrally planned model to a socialist-oriented market mechanism, proactively adapting to new economic demands.
Vinachem – The Core of Vietnam’s Chemical Industry
Throughout these 57 years, the Vietnam National Chemical Group (Vinachem) has played a pivotal role, inheriting and advancing the legacy of the General Department of Chemicals and the Vietnam Chemical Corporation through various eras.

In 1995, the Vietnam Chemical Corporation was established, heralding a new development phase. From 2006, the parent-subsidiary company model was introduced; by 2010, Vinachem had transitioned to a single-member limited liability company wholly owned by the State. Each organisational transformation has been accompanied by innovations in management, improved production capacity, market expansion, and enhanced competitiveness.
Today, Vinachem consists of member units operating across key sectors such as fertilisers, basic chemicals, crop protection chemicals, technical rubber, detergents, and mineral extraction and processing. The Group’s products serve not only agriculture but also numerous industries and fields across society.
The chemical industry’s role has evolved from supporting production to becoming a core sector, closely linked to most economic and technical fields. Thus, its development not only benefits the sector itself but also strengthens the country’s self-reliance, competitiveness, and economic resilience.

Resilient in the Face of Challenges, Proactive in Innovation
As the industry enters a new phase, it faces ever greater demands for technology, product quality, resource efficiency, environmental protection, and sustainable development. Adding to this are the unpredictable fluctuations of raw material and energy markets, supply chains and international competition.
In this context, the traditional spirit of unity, perseverance, and creativity remains a source of strength for Vinachem and the sector as a whole to adapt and grow.
The Group is accelerating restructuring, modernising management, deepening investment, enhancing research and development, driving digital transformation and technological renewal, and gradually moving towards green production and a circular economy. These are key requirements for the chemical industry to boost its competitiveness, develop sustainably, and better meet the demands of the economy in this new era. The Ministry of Industry and Trade recognises Vinachem as a pillar and leader of the sector, steadfast in the mission to build an independent and self-reliant chemical industry.
Especially given the need for scientific and technological advancement, innovation, and digital transformation, Vinachem identifies these as crucial drivers for improving productivity, quality, and operational efficiency. The Group is also progressively expanding international cooperation, diversifying markets, increasing product value, and seeking deeper integration into global value chains.

Continuing the Legacy, Writing New Chapters
Fifty-seven years is a proud journey, created by the effort, intellect, and dedication of generations of workers in the chemical industry.
From factories built in times of war to today’s modern production lines; from basic goods meeting essential national needs to products now competitive in international markets—each step of progress bears the hallmarks of unity, discipline, creativity, initiative, and relentless advancement.
Celebrating the 57th Anniversary of the Vietnamese Chemical Industry is not only an occasion to look back upon a glorious path, but also a moment for each official, Party member, and worker to look to the future with renewed confidence and responsibility.
Building on the tradition of previous generations, Vinachem continues to affirm its central role in the chemical sector, determined to develop into an ever-stronger, more modern, efficient, and sustainable Group—making active contributions to the country’s industrialisation, modernisation, and a self-reliant economy.
57 years—a proud journey. A tradition continued. A new chapter unfolding.
