"The day that Vietnam affirms to the world its status as a powerful nation will be the Chemical industry" - Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Khuong - National University of Singapore

02:33 PM @ Friday - 26 December, 2025

On December 25, 2025, the Vietnam National Chemical Group (Vinachem) organized a Workshop titled "Chemical industry development trends in the 5.0 era and strategic implications for Vietnamese enterprises", aimed at updating the global context, the restructuring trends of the chemical industry, and the strategic development direction for enterprises in the new period.

Attending the Workshop were Mr. Nguyen Huu Tu – Member of the Board of Directors, General Director of the Group; Mr. Nguyen Van Luyen, Mr. Dao Trong Cuong – Deputy General Directors of the Group; Mr. Tran Van Long – Supervisor of the Group, along with leaders of functional departments and representatives of member units.

The Workshop was honored to invite Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Khuong – National University of Singapore as the keynote speaker. The program was connected online to nearly 50 points at member units and livestreamed on the Vietnam Chemical Industry Group Information Page Fanpage, attracting the attention of a large number of officials, engineers, and experts throughout the system.

Chemical industry in the 5.0 era: Global landscape and restructuring trends

At the Workshop, Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Khuong presented an overview of the Vietnamese chemical industry, placing it in comparison with countries in the region and the world. According to the Professor, the 5.0 era marks a shift from "smart" to "wise," based on popular foundational technologies, in which AI, digitization, and green chemistry play a central role.

The global chemical industry is entering a phase of profound restructuring, simultaneously affected by artificial intelligence, Green Chemistry, geopolitical disruptions, and rapidly changing customer needs. Prof. Dr. pointed out 7 main restructuring trends, including:

• Restructuring by value chain;

• Restructuring by end-use industry;

• Restructuring through M&A, divestment, and spin-offs;

• Restructuring according to ESG and circular economy;

• Restructuring by digital transformation and AI;

• Optimization of industrial space;

• Increasing the role of leading enterprises.

Strategic implications for the Vietnamese chemical industry

Analyzing the domestic reality, Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Khuong pointed out some core weaknesses of the current Vietnamese chemical industry such as: industry structure still biased towards bulk commodities, low added value; limited R&D; ESG not yet considered a competitive advantage; policy and management thinking still prioritizing output over solutions.

On that basis, Prof. Dr. proposed a vision to 2035, building the Vietnamese chemical industry into a solution platform for strategic industrial ecosystems, with the goal of forming 5–7 "chemical 5.0" enterprises, associated with green transition, digital transformation, and ensuring supply chain security.

The core groups of solutions emphasized include:

• Shifting from product manufacturing to providing total solutions;

• ESG becoming a core competitive advantage, not just a compliance requirement;

• Digital transformation and AI application (DX–AIX) as a lever to improve productivity;

• Prioritizing the "small volume – high value" segment, associated with material and technological innovation.

International experience and fundamental reform

The workshop also shared experience in developing the chemical industry of many countries and large corporations: China with the model of spatial concentration and mastering the input chain; South Korea with leading enterprises and effective State–Enterprise cooperation; Singapore developing a hub for chemistry – logistics – R&D; Germany with strict environmental standards and material innovation; Taiwan focusing on industrial supporting materials.

Typical enterprises such as BASF, Sinopec, LG Chem were cited as successful models in selling solutions, mastering intermediate chemicals, and rising through learning from FDI.

At the macro level, Prof. Dr. emphasized 5 factors shaping the future including: geographical location, demographic characteristics, technology, strategy, and culture; at the same time clarifying the role of the developmental developmental state. Five pairs of keywords stimulating strategic thinking were emphasized: Growth – Evolution; Efficiency – Efficacy; Management – Governance; Achievement – Result; Asset – Legacy.

At the Workshop, delegates discussed together, asked questions, and received answers from Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Khuong regarding concerns, providing scientific and practical arguments and deep strategic vision for the process of restructuring and developing the Vietnamese chemical industry in the new context. The shares of Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Khuong not only helped Vinachem and its member enterprises clearly identify challenges and opportunities but also affirmed the pivotal role of the chemical industry in the journey to realize the Vietnam Vision 2045.

With the orientation of green transition – digital transformation – improving management capacity, the Vietnam National Chemical Group is step by step affirming the core role of a state-owned enterprise in building a modern and sustainable chemical industry, contributing to improving the position and competitiveness of the Vietnamese economy in the international arena.
